Music Therapy
|
Music
Therapy is an established healthcare profession that uses music
to address physical, emotional, cognitive, and social needs of
individuals of all ages. The music therapy group at the RRI
Day
Habilitation Program is a
time for group members to share quality musical experiences.
Group members are encouraged to choose songs and artists
featured in each session. Music may include Elvis Presley, 50's
Rock, The Beatles, Patriotic songs, holiday/seasonal songs,
requests, and adapted songwriting. Shakers, tambourines, and
drums are always available to group members. Participants
actively engage by watching, vocalizing, making facial
expressions, listening, playing instruments, singing, and making
eye contact with friends. Pictures and visual props are often
utilized to help people become involved in the group. Our music
group also shapes and reinforces social skills, increases
cognition, and decreases stress. The music therapy group
continues to be a well-attended and popular group activity for
the day program.
